Our Story...
Our story is a pretty simple one. In 2006 my brother’s and my families started practicing Tae Kwon Do at a local martial arts school. A part of that school’s focus was Arnis (Philipino martial art which makes use of sticks) as well as Tae Kwon Do. Between the two disciplines, the bo staff, wooden sword, and fighting sticks were used often. To help keep everyone’s gear separate and to help with transport back and forth from the school we all got the usual staff bags available.
Like anyone else that has used one of those generic bags we quickly found the bottom of the bags ripping apart from the weight of the staff stressing the bottom seam and the inevitable damage from the bag hitting the ground. Additionally, we were frustrated that it only held staff weapons and if anything else was put it the long pocket, because of gravity, digging it out was a chore. Also, the cheap black nylon fabric those bags are frequently made from was an affront to our sense of aesthetics. Discouraged with these bags performance these reasons and being a severe do-it-yourselfer, my sister-in-law created a pattern for a multi-function bag. These new bags held a variety of weapons and didn’t have a seam on the bottom, instead a panel with seams on the sides of the bag. In the search for an inexpensive, durable fabric with personality, she settled on remnants of outdoor upholstery fabric from the local fabric store. Putting all this together resulted in a uniquely colorful and versatile long weapons bag.
As soon as they started bringing the new bags to the Tae Kwon Do school fellow students asked how they could get one (my family included). My sister-in-law recognized she could make her bags for people and sell them. She proceeded, making each one out of different fabric, so each one was unique. Quickly just about everyone in the school had one of her bags. At a championship in 2011 another school asked her if she could fill an order for a dozen bo bags.
Realizing the potential for these bags we started researching what martial arts trained with bo staffs and swords (a shorter list are those that don’t) and what other high-quality bags are out there (turns out not many). Next, we looked for a local manufacturer that understood the uniqueness of this product and the level of quality we required for its construction. We found what we were looking for in a small custom bag maker located in Seattle, Washington that made the bags on site.
In early 2014 we settled on a production version of the bag. We would offer it in the upholstery designs that made it so distinctive and in a basic black as well. We started production, set up this website, and began filling orders.
We believe we make the best bag of this type available anywhere today and we think you will agree with us.
